TNMCorps offers an exciting volunteer opportunity for those interested in contributing to The National Map by updating and verifying structures data across various regions, including all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. As a TNMCorps volunteer, you'll be part of a vital effort to enhance the USGS National Structures Database, The National Map, and U.S. Topo Maps.
Volunteer Tasks:
Internet Research: Engage in online research to collect and update structures data. This involves checking the accuracy of existing structure points' locations by comparing them with aerial imagery.
Data Entry: Verify and confirm the name and address information for structures using authoritative sources.
Adding Missing Points: Contribute by adding missing structure points to the map.
Removing Non-existent Structures: Help maintain accuracy by removing points for structures that no longer exist.
Recognition and Benefits:
TNMCorps volunteers receive virtual badges for their participation.
Contributions may be recognized (with your permission) through USGS and The National Map social media channels.
Requirements:
Reliable internet access is essential as this is a remote, computer-based opportunity.
No specific hours or length of service requirements. You can dedicate as much or as little time as your schedule allows.
Suitable for ages 16 and over.
How to Get Started:
Apply for the opportunity.
Once your application is accepted, you'll receive instructions via email from nationalmapcorps@usgs.gov.
Note: Contributions to TNMCorps will not count toward a Volunteer Pass because the U.S. Geological Survey is not part of the federal land management agencies participating in the Interagency Pass Program.
If you're passionate about geography, data accuracy, and contributing to valuable mapping resources, consider joining TNMCorps. Your efforts will have a lasting impact on mapping data in the United States and its territories.
