At Friends For Life, every animal matters. Founded in 2002, Friends For Life introduced the no-kill shelter model to Houston - saving animals regardless of their breed, age or condition.
Houston-grown, we’re here to help our neighbors care for the pets they love.
We’re not finished until every animal has a safe home. Until then, we’ll be innovating, improving and tracking results to find the most effective ways to save lives.
Do you love talking with people and have great communication/listening skills? Do you have a passion for cats? We have the perfect volunteer position for you!
Cat Docents are the newest volunteer position at Friends For Life. In this volunteer position, you will take visitors through the shelter on a guided tour, where visitors will be able to meet our cats, learn more about FFL, and ask any questions they may have along the way. In the cat rooms, you will make the visitors feel welcome while also encouraging them to go slow with the cats. This will be the time for you to do some brief intros about the cats and the rooms (pointing out which cats are fraidy, which are shy, etc), and answer any questions they may have.
Ideal candidates will need to learn the following items (we will train you!):
Answer common questions about our shelter
Understanding our No Kill model
Know our general shelter etiquette
Understand what being a "Forward Thinking Shelter" means.
Learn Cat body language & "choice" testing
Know our Adoption process
Understand our Shelter/Facility FAQ’s
Has an interest in growing a relationship with our cats in an effort to be a greater advocate for them, and is willing to learn more about working with the cats behaviorally.
