Description
Grand Marais Art Colony Board Vacancy

The Grand Marais Art Colony (GMAC) seeks board members who are passionate about the arts and are poised to rethink the role art can play in our lives and society, especially within the context of and revolving around the Great Lakes Region.

Founded in 1947 as a summer artist residency program by instructors from the Minneapolis School of Art, GMAC was incorporated as a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization in 1984. Today, the Grand Marais Art Colony serves approximately 15,000 people per year through workshops, studio access, residency programs, community activities, exhibitions, and youth programs.

GMAC is located in Minnesota along Lake Superior’s North Shore. Grand Marais is situated on the doorstep of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and within the Superior National Forest. GMAC recently acquired two new buildings in the heart of Grand Marais, allowing it to expand its offerings around the intersection of contemporary arts and issues pertaining to the Great Lakes Region.

Board of Directors

GMAC is committed to being a diverse and inclusive organization that supports creative work. In furthering that commitment, we are seeking board members who are a part of communities that are under-represented on nonprofit boards. We highly encourage applications from individuals from the BIPOC, disability, LGBTQ and gender fluid communities.

The Grand Marais Art Colony is seeking to increase both the breadth and depth of its leadership. Some board members are local to Cook County, Minnesota, however there are no geographic restrictions. We strive to ensure that one-third of the Board of Directors are practicing artists.

Board Commitment

The role would involve attending six(6) Board meetings per year. The likely total time commitment is the equivalent of two to three days per month. Terms are for three (3) years and are renewable. Board and committee meeting attendance can occur through remote access.
