Buena Vista Horace Mann (BVHM) Writing Project:
We are currently seeking volunteers to work in our Buena Vista Horace Mann Writing Project Monday - Thursday from 4:00PM - 6:30PM during the 2016-2017 school year. Volunteers will have the chance to develop the imaginations of the third, fourth, and fifth grade students at the Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 School in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood. Volunteers will support students as they develop their creative writing skills, crafting original works in a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and prose. BVHM Writing Tutors will mentor this exceptional group of budding authors, and help them cultivate essential academic skills to develop a foundation of success as writers and critical thinkers.
Tutors will help lead the students through the writing process, from brainstorming and pre-writing, to drafting, and on through revising, editing, and publishing. Through this spiral of writing and rewriting, students will deepen their understanding of the writing process, and find their creative voices.
Many of these students are learning English as a second language, so Spanish language skills are highly valued, though not necessary.
