In-School Tutoring:
Are you hoping to work closely with San Francisco public school students during the school day (8:00AM - 3:00PM)? 826 Valencia's in-schools projects could be the perfect fit! Applications for the 2016-2017 school year are currently being accepted. We partner with teachers in San Francisco to craft unique writing projects, all of which are designed to teach specific journalistic, expository, or creative writing skills to students, and most result in a publication that we sell in our Pirate Store storefront.

In addition to our presence in teacher’s classrooms on a project basis, we staff two dedicated 826 Writers’ Rooms to support teachers and students on site throughout the year, one at Everett Middle School and one at Mission High School. The Writers’ Room at Everett is in its 11th year publishing the Straight Up News, a bilingual school newspaper written and edited by Everett students, and the 9th graders of Mission High School's Writers' Room collaborate on a magazine project featuring essays focused on social justice issues. Our staff work with the administration of each school to serve all students, and particularly focus on supporting English Language Learners. Teachers report that students develop their ideas more fully and express themselves more clearly as a result of the support in the Writers’ Rooms.

Though knowledge of Spanish is by no means necessary, volunteers who can communicate in Spanish may find opportunities to practice their Spanish skills as well as learn different ESL strategies from experienced teachers. We are always looking for more volunteers to go into these schools to continue to make these projects a success.

Note:
If you are a teacher and your students could use additional support with any sort of project, please contact Programs Director Ryan Young by emailing ryan@826valencia.org. Let us know what you’re working on, when, and where — and we’ll dispatch an enthusiastic batch of trained tutors to your school.

We are currently unable to provide support to any schools outside of San Francisco. As we continue to expand our efforts, we hope to widen our reach.
