Description
BGCBigs is partnered with HEROS (Hockey Education Reaching Out Society) to provide free ice time and hockey gear to children and youth in North East Edmonton. The program focuses on teaching life skills to kids through the game of hockey. There are 4 “HEROS Behaviors” that are taught throughout the program- listen, respect, discipline, and have fun. We run a variety of activities on the ice including teambuilding activities, tag games, relay races, hockey specific skills, and much more! The HEROS program has been running in Edmonton for 11 years, and has a great group of volunteers that often stay for many years in the program.

There is a rare opportunity this year for new volunteers to join the program, and we are looking for both male and female volunteers to commit to the program each Wednesday from 4-6PM, September 26th 2018-March 20th 2019. Our start/end dates are flexible, but we encourage you to volunteer for the school year as our youth rely on your commitment to their success!

You do not have to be a hockey player to volunteer- we also run some programs off ice for our junior high and high school players, and would love some extra support both on and off the ice. The volunteer responsibilities would include: making the weekly commitment, being a supportive and active listener, following agency guidelines, ensuring child safety, and, of course, having fun!

Children with mentors are:
• 80% more likely to finish high school
• 46% less likely to use drugs
• 27% less likely to use alcohol
• 52% less likely to skip school
• 78% less likely to rely on social assistance as an adult

People who mentor:
• Gain personal growth and development
• Have a positive new perspective on life
• Make a positive difference in the life of a child and the community
• See meaningful improvements in their own mental and physical health
• Report increased levels of happiness and energy
